RPM was invited to trial how a team of automotive trained consultants would tackle improving the reliability of new rolling stock being introduced into the UK market. The team introduced Visualisation Centres to understand the exact situation and followed that up with process improvements to speed up the time taken from understanding a problem to a modification being designed and introduced back on the vehicle.
Further work was undertaken improving the time taken for maintenance operations, accuracy of maintenance reporting and improved processes in parts ordering and scheduling. This process started off on one fleet of trains in the UK and was subsequently rolled out with every new train introduced since.
Fleets all over the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark and the USA have successfully been introduced using this process. Rolling stock reliability has been significantly improved since the introduction of this piece of work.
